In 1944, amidst ongoing conflict during World War Two, an American warship docked in a safe harbour at Wellington, New Zealand. The destroyer, the USS General Randall carried soldiers onboard - and also 700 Polish orphans. Most of the children were motherless and fatherless, all had escaped from concentration camps in Siberia and had come 4000 miles through the snow to Iran. Each was a child of the military: Polish soldiers, airmen and resistance agents. The motto for many of these families “For Our Freedom and Yours”. There is a plaque on the beach at Wellington to commemorate the day the USS General Randall came into this port carrying its unusual cargo.

This story begins a year beforehand, when the Polish children were in Persia. It concerns an event that altered the children’s lives and put them on this ship. When the American President came to Tehran to meet Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin to discuss how they would win the war. This story is fiction, based on a series of true stories and amid true historical events.

In November, 1943 at a crucial moment during the war with the Axis powers, the city of Tehran in Iran waited like a bubbling cauldron for Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin to arrive. The Big Three would meet for the first time and hold a discussion for three days and during this time would decide the future of the world. This meeting would alter the course of history. Everyone in Tehran knew this. The Nazis knew it too.

Assassins were coming

Double agents, secret service spies, special operations commandos. This situation is volatile. The stakes are high. The winner will own the world.

Into the frey entered every kind of wise guy - among them potentates and shapeshifters and turncoats .

And then finally there came a miracle.

How will Magdalena resolve the pain in her heart and do what she must?

Her duty is to protect all three leaders. Roosevelt, Churchill - and also Stalin.

In 1940, 22,000 Polish officers and intellectuals were arrested by the Soviet NKVD. Many were held here at Kozelsk Camp before being transported to Katyn Forest for execution.

Our Story

I write this story for my mother - who is one of the Polish children who (in the midst of WW2) came to New Zealand on the American warship, USS General Randall. I am writing a fiction story - but these tales are inspired by true events and real people.
