They were called the Angels of Death - and sometimes "The Angels of Vengence". They were knights who rode into battle wearing angel's wings.

Magdalena calls on the spirits of the Angels when times go bad. These are not angels who look down from heaven - these are ones who erupt from deep inside her soul - for she carries these angels in her heart. They are the spirits of her ancestors. And then it is like lightning! She goes forward feeling the wind from their wings.
And sometimes when she is in a tight spot.. and she doesn't know what to do... it is like an angel whispers in her ear.

Tolkien took inspiration from the Siege of Vienna when writing about the Battle of the Pelennor Fields at the Siege of Minas Tirith, aka the Siege of Gondor, in Return of the King.
