The Gypsies
Gypsies came with the Polish exiles to New Zealand. They were Highlanders from the Carpathian mountains. This land is an epically beautiful place, but wild and full of magic. Theirs is the land of the vampires.

I grew up with Gypsies. First, I must tell you I love Gypsies. It burns a hole in my soul to tell you how they were treated by the Nazis. But here goes…

The Romani - like the Polish and the Jews - were classified as "racially inferior". This led to their persecution and extermination during the Holocaust. However, the Nazis were fascinated with the occult, and Heinrich Himmler, in particular, was obsessed with pseudo-science and clairvoyance. Hitler ran his life – and made crucial decisions - using a clairvoyant. Nobody seems to have told him that the gypsy fortune-tellers could tell him where he was going … “hmmm, straight to hell”.
The Gypsies have remarkable gifts – extraordinary talents and abilities that go above and beyond merely reading cards and crystal balls. But as for the card reading? Oh yes, they do that too.
The Roma Flamenco
The flamenco dance with its castanets and pounding feet is gypsy music. Famous examples of flamenco can be seen in Bizet's "Carmen" and also in "The Sketches of Spain."
However there is another kind of Gypsy Music...

These are our Gypsies. These are the gypsies from the Carpathian Mountains. They become geniuses when armed with a violin.
