Winston Churchill loved cats. He always had a cat, sometimes two. An animal lover, Churchill frequently carried on coversations with his own beloved cat Nelson, telling him once that he needed to be more stouthearted after the large gray feline flinched during an air raid. https://www.historynet.com/photos-of-winston-churchill-at-war/winston-churchill-as-prime-minister-1940-1945/

Winston's wartime cat, Nelson.

Winston Churchill decided to adopt Nelson, a black stray, when he witnessed him chasing off a "huge dog" from Admiralty House, London. Following Churchill's appointment as prime minister in 1940, Nelson moved into 10 Downing Street from Admiralty House sometime during the summer.

Winston Churchill was an animal lover and kept many pets, but his favourite were cats.

"Nelson is the bravest cat I ever knew ... I decided to adopt him and name him after our great Admiral." Winston Churchill
